I just rewatched this movie for the first time since I saw it in the theater, and it’s such a perfect love story and ode to exactly what it says: women of the 20th century who lived through so much change.
None of it would work at all though without the luminous, crackling, and frankly, very sexy performance from Annette Bening. I’m ashamed to say I never thought much about her before I saw this — I’ve seen some of her other movies but she never stood out to me necessarily.
After this one though, I’m ready to join (or start!) the local chapter of her fan club — I cannot stop thinking of Bening and her character Dorothea and hoping they’re doing well, which is the hallmark of an indelible performance to me. If you missed this movie or just haven’t seen it in a while — treat yourself!
